Types of Back Pain

The back is often separated into three sections: the upper, middle, and lower back. The upper and middle segments are combined into the 12 vertebrae of the thoracic region. The lumbar region and lower back – comprised of five vertebrae – are one and the same. There are several actions, conditions, and injuries that can cause pain in this area.

Common Causes of Back Pain

Pain in the back is one of the most common reasons why we see patients. The spine is made up of interconnecting bones, joints, nerves, muscles, and ligaments that all work in unison to provide flexibility, strength, and support to the body. It is a very fragile system, where a single malfunctioning component can mean a great deal of pain.

Often, back pain is caused by a soft tissue injury. Among those that are commonly seen are strains, sprains, damage or injuries caused by an automotive or sporting accident, improper carrying of weight or lifting, poor ergonomic support, and other common everyday situations.

Back pain can also be caused by chronic conditions. These are generally considered any condition that causes pain that lasts for more than three months. At that point, we must assume that the cause is beyond the body’s natural ability to heal and that intervention is warranted.

Chronic back pain has its own set of common causes that include:

  • Dysfunction of sacroiliac or facet joints
  • Herniated disc
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Fracture
  • Dislocation
  • Scoliosis or other improper curvature of the spine

In addition, there are other – less common – causes of back pain. These include tumors and autoimmune diseases such as fibromyalgia, Lupus, or Crohn’s. Osteomyelitis – a rare condition that is life-threatening and extremely painful – can also cause back pain.
